Exploring Japan: Looking Beyond the Stereotypes

Japan is not just about manga, anime and cosplay. It came a surprise that Japan offers us so much more. It was no doubt that this family travel was the most clutched, thrifty, and tiring. But, that didn’t hinder us to appreciate the beauty of Japan.

Last August 1, 2019, we started our 5-day family tour to Kyoto and Osaka, Japan. It was in fact sudden because of an airfare promo, and since we can’t stop the urge to travel, we took advantage of the time when most of us are available. With all of my siblings in college and work, it was the month when they had a break and had less responsibilities. But, that was not the case for me. I had to sacrifice three school days to join in the family travel. Undoubtedly, I did not regret it.

Not wasting any time, we were occupied going to different places during an unexpected hot weather. Summer in Japan is no joke. Not to mention that prices there were extremely high compared to other countries that we’ve been to. We have to be thrifty all throughout the trip, leaving us no choice but to walk a distance of a kilometer and limit our meals. For those reasons, the trip itself was too tiring.

We spent the first half of the trip in a countryside-like city of Kyoto where we get to experience what it’s like to live in the past. Kyoto was the only major city to escape from the devastation of the Second World War, preserving much of the atmosphere of the past.

Here are the most recommended high-valued tourist spots in Kyoto:

Fushimi- Inari Taisha Shrine

Featuring a four-kilometer-long avenue of bright orange and red “tori” or arches, this is one of the most famous shrines in Japan. Most Japanese people visit this place to pray to the rice goddess for prosperity.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Found in the eastern side of Kyoto, this is listed as an important UNESCO World Heritage site. It features a picturesque location on the Otowa Mountain overlooking the city. Although we visited it at the time of its renovation, the terrace affords remarkable views of the city and the surrounding wooded hills.

Gion District

Gion district is famous for its combination of modern architecture and historical beauty that provides a unique taste of numerous Japanese traditions. This is where we particularly felt Old Japan where old century restaurants and teashops are located.

Sagano Bamboo Forest

Growing tall on the outskirts of Kyoto, Sagano Bamboo Forest is Japan’s recognized soundscape, making it one of the world’s prettiest groves and the most photographed sights in the city. The sound of swaying stalks will surely bring you your most needed peace of mind.

The second half of the trip is the beautiful cityscape of Osaka. Second to Tokyo as the most populous city in Japan, this complement the historical setting that is of Kyoto. Famous for its modern architecture, nightlife, and hearty street food, this place is surely worth the visit.

Here are the most top-rated tourist attractions in Osaka:

Osaka Castle

Though situated in such city, it is still one of the most famous landmarks as it highlights the historical unification of Japan in the past. Open to public, the five-story castle operates a historical museum inside detailing the extensive history of Osaka and the castle itself.

Dotonbori

Ever heard of the running Glico Man sign? You can only find it at Dotonbori. Best seen at night, Dotonbori never closes with its great tasting variety of restaurants that are open for 24 hours. Renowned for its bright neon lights and flashy 3D signboards will surely enliven the feels and lit your night. Want to just chill and view the beauty of the street? Riding a boat cruise is the right activity for you.

Umeda Sky Building

Umeda Sky Building is a spectacular high rise building that will leave you breathless with its strikingly unique architectural design. The observatory deserves a huge recognition from which you can enjoy sweeping views over the city. It is definitely worth a visit for the stunning 360 degree panoramic views that can be enjoyed from the open deck.

Universal Studios Japan

Last but definitely not the least, is the most-renowned themed park in the country, the Universal Studios Japan.

Home to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a potterhead like me just can’t get over how attractive and instragram-worthy it is. Pardon for the series of pictures, but it still felt like a dream just being in that themed park for the whole day.

The Hogwarts Castle was no joke. Lit with lights and music in the background, it made the whole experience surreal.

And of course, don’t forget the famous signature Butterbeer drink! Don’t worry, its non-alcoholic and basically tastes like butterscotch soda with whipped cream. If you can’t get enough of it, take another sip and get it in a souvenir mug.

All the other attractions were also worth the mention. With themes like Despicable Me, Spider Man, Jurassic Park, and many more, a family will surely have a great time.

That’s it for this adventure. If you have any questions, please feel free to share your thoughts!
